Wash the salmon well, pat dry, season with salt and sugar on both sides, rubbing it in well. Top with a few pieces of fresh dill. Wrap in heavy-duty silver foil, then saran wrap tightly. 2. Place into a pan, place a heavy object on top. Let cure for 48 hours, turning it over after 24 hours, and placing the heavy object back on top. 3. Once done, was well, and pat dry. Slice extremely thinly. 4. Place in the center of a large serving board, garnish with the diced vegetables on the sides. 5. In a food processor blend all the pesto ingredients until smooth. 6. Serve the pesto on the fish, or on the side. Boards, nowadays, are anything but boring. APRIL 30, ‘25 // Questions & Answers from Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l’s Thursday Night Lecture Why Pray? Q. What’s the sense of praying for Hashem to change our status? If He sent something upon us, it certainly is for our benefit. A. When we pray, we say to Hashem as follows, “Ribbono Shel Olam, oh Master of the world, we know why You sent upon on us this and this (let’s say a toothache or a headache). It’s because we ignored You all the time, when we didn’t have a toothache, didn’t have a headache. We should have thanked You all the time, because it’s a miracle when we don’t have a headache.” The head is full of circuits, and if the smallest circuit gets confused, if there is a mistake in the routing of electric messages, you get a headache. Small things can cause big headaches. Sometimes allergies disturb the function of the mind, or the brain disturbs the function of the nerves, and they send messages of pain. So many causes. Why we don’t have headaches all the time is a miracle. Why we don’t have toothaches all the time is a miracle. And why did we forget Hashem during all those days and months that things were working perfectly? He is doing miracles for us. So we say, “Hashem, we know the reason You sent us the headache today, it’s to remind us that You are around.” So therefore, we say to Hashem: “Now we acknowledge, we recognize that You are around. And from now on, if You are going to heal us, we are going to see to it that we will recognize You, by thanking You constantly. That’s all You want. So why should we be aware of You by headaches? We will be aware of You by lack of headaches.” So Hashem says, “Well, if you really mean it, I will give you a trial. And let Me see if lack of headaches will cause you to thank Me as much as headaches cause you to think about Me.” You will say “Baruch Atah Hashem,” at the end of Shemoneh Esrei, “hamevorech es amo Yisrael bashalom”; it’s peace. Peace means there is no war. Th re is no civil war, no invasions. Nobody is trying to kill you right now. Once a man called me up late at night, an ex-yeshivah boy. He couldn’t leave the house because he borrowed a lot of money from loan sharks — gangsters. He was on narcotics, nebach, and he couldn’t pay. It was twelve o’clock at night and he needed a few hundred dollars. It was an emergency, otherwise he would be gunned down. I couldn’t do anything for him, but that fellow was in terror. But tonight, when you go home, nobody is trying to kill you. That’s shalom. Are you thanking Hashem? There are so many reasons why there shouldn’t be shalom, so many bad people in the world. But nobody is bothering you. At night when you go to sleep, you leave your telephone on; it’s a miracle, why doesn’t it ring in middle of the night? Bums don’t pound on our door. Accidents can happen, they need an emergency telephone, they pound on your door, “Open up quickly, we have to save a life!” What can you do? Run down in your pajamas…? And so you live in peace. Do you appreciate peace? Are you thanking Hashem for peace? If you do, you are always thinking of Hashem. No toothache today, aah, baruch Hashem. You get up in the morning, no headache, baruch Hashem! If you get up with a headache, thank Him for not having a toothache. There are worse things than headaches. Thank Him for not having arthritis. People ache in many bones. Thank Him for a lot of other things. And this fellow who is being pursued by the loan-shark gang, if he could get up in the morning with a good headache, but know that his pursuers were all gone, he wouldn’t mind the headache. He would be singing! He would be humming in the bathroom. And so Hashem says to us, if you are sincere, then I will see that you don’t have to be reminded by headaches, because you will remind yourself by lack of headaches. And that’s the purpose of praying. Praying means we know that You want us to think about You, that’s why You sent the trouble on us. We promise You that instead of that, we will thank You all the time. And so Hashem is willing to take your word for it, and will exchange one reminder for the other reminder.
