Mix well in a large container and serve. A dream in a cup… One sip of this delicious drink, and you’ll be transported to simpler times. Happens to also be great choice to enhance your Purim table. Cured Salmon INGREDIENTS: • 2 Lb. Atlantic salmon, skin removed • 1 Cup sugar • 1 Cup salt • 1 Sprig fresh dill • 1 Jalapeno pepper, thinly sliced • 3 Colors of peppers, diced in small cubes PESTO: • 1 Container checked parsley • 1 Sprig fresh dill, plus more for garnish • 3 Cloves garlic • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice • ½ Cup olive oil • 1 Tsp. salt • Dash of black pepper • 2 Tbsp. pine nuts, optional DIRECTIONS: 1. Wash the salmon well, pat dry, season with salt and sugar on both sides, rubbing it in well. Top with a few pieces of fresh dill. Wrap in heavy-duty silver foil, then saran wrap tightly. 2. Place into a pan, place a heavy object on top. Let cure for 48 hours, turning it over after 24 hours, and placing the heavy object back on top. 3. Once done, was well, and pat dry. Slice extremely thinly. 4. Place in the center of a large serving board, garnish with the diced vegetables on the sides. 5. In a food processor blend all the pesto ingredients until smooth. 6. Serve the pesto on the fish, or on the side. Boards, nowadays, are anything but boring. MARCH 19, ‘25 // Questions & Answers from Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l’s Thursday Night Lecture Lesson of the Lamppost Q. What lesson can we learn by looking at a lamppost? Pesach Prep Shines A Light On Our Greatness Q. What is something we can think about while we’re busy with the preparations for Pesach? A. That’s a very good question. Motzaei Shabbos we make a blessing “Borei m’orei ha’aish — Who creates the light of fire.” Now it’s a pity, a tragedy, that it’s not utilized; it’s a berachah (blessing) on artificial light. Why should it happen that when you set fire to something, it makes light? Combustion is going on all the time — a piece of wood is rotting away, that’s combustion. It’s a chemical combination of the oxygen in the air with the carbon of the wood, only it’s going on so slowly that you don’t see any fire. When there is rapid combustion, that’s a fire and it produces light. Light is a miracle. Don’t think it’s a small thing; light is a miracle. It cannot be explained in ordinary words, and even scientists have difficulty explaining what light means. So we make a berachah on Motzaei Shabbos over artificial light and thank Hashem for that great gift! Artificial light is a great gift. When you see a lamppost that illuminates the street, it’s not dark; it’s a pleasure. You can see where the sidewalk is uneven, you watch your step. You can’t make a berachah every day, but you should appreciate artificial light, and once a week on Motzaei Shabbos we are given an opportunity to talk about it. It’s a pity people don’t understand that: “Borei m’orei ha’aish…” they think it’s a ceremony. No, once a week Havdalah’s the time to think about what a great gift light is. When I was a boy, they didn’t have electric lights, they had gas burning lights; you had to take a match and light the gas light. Electric light was something new. One day, Edison brought in a number of scientists and industrialists and said, “I’m going to show you a remarkable thing.” He turned on the first electric bulb, and they were stunned. A light like the sun! Sunlight! The first time in history an electric light turned on. It’s a very great gift that Hashem gives us. So “Borei m’orei ha’aish!” Artificial light should cause us to have very great gratitude. Certainly, a lamppost is an opportunity for thinking people to feel gratitude to the Borei m’orei ha’aish who created such a phenomenon in this world. A. One thing you can spend time on is appreciating that the Am Yisroel are צמאים לעבודת יוצרם – they’re a people who go all out for Hashem. Poshuteh Jews are keeping the Torah with all their hearts. Men and women boys and girls are getting ready for Pesach and it’s not easy work but they’re doing it anyhow. Some people want to dodge their work for Pesach – they want to go to a hotel. But those who are thirsty for mitzvos don’t dodge work. They want to work because it’s a mitzvah. It’s shver, it’s not easy – heint it’s doubly shver because erev Pesach is Shabbos but they’re happy to do it. They’re not going to dodge their responsibilities. Taking things in and out; bringing in the Pesachdige keilim, taking out the chametz – all kind of preparations. Now, I’m not interested in changing the curtains. Changing the curtains is not necessary. You want to make a spring house cleaning, you want to change the curtains, I’m moichel that. But to prepare for Pesach – it’s a very great mitzvah! And many, many, very poshuteh people are laboring to prepare for Pesach! You have to appreciate them. They’re tzmaim, they’re thirsty for avodas yotzrom. We’re accustomed to seeing it and so we don’t appreciate it but now is a good time to think about it. We should train ourselves to see the greatness of the Am Yisroel, how much people are willing to do in order to carry out the details of the mitzvos. And it’s a very important shleimus to appreciate that. No matter how great you are in avodas Hashem, how great you are in knowledge of Torah, you must add this information, this appreciation of the Am Yisroel to your personality.
