Shabbos was the highlight of the week, the day the camp was bathed in a special, holy glow. “ ere’s something di erent in the air,” said Malya, a wideeyed girl whose thin hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and whose smiled exposed two missing teeth. “I don’t know how to describe it, but I can feel it here.” She pointed to her heart. “Yes, of course there is,” Chava replied. “It’s the magic of Shabbos.” On Friday evening, as the sun slowly set over the small, cozy campground, the campers and sta headed out to the edge of the forest for lecha dodi and the special Shabbos welcome song. en, arm in arm they danced back to the dining room, where a veritable feast was prepared—fragrant challah, slices of ge lte sh and horseradish, watery chicken soup and, everyone’s favorite, schnitzel and potato kugel. Over dessert, cherry ices that turned their tongues beet red, Chava quieted her charges as they listened to the special Shabbos story. is was, undeniably, the highlight of their week. Every Friday night, another camper would be chosen to share her life story. One week, it was Sasha’s turn. Sasha was thirteen years old, tall and broad for her age. She wore her hair long, in a thick braid that cascaded down her back and swished in the wind. Her apparel was mostly hand me downs from a younger neighbor. But she didn’t notice the patches in the elbows, or the grass stains on her sneakers. She had been preparing for her Friday night presentation ever since Tova, the dynamic head counselor, had called her aside on Monday and given her the privilege. And now, as the dining room slowly quieted, the campers sated and sleepy, Sasha sat up straighter in her seat. “Attention campers!” said Tova, once the room was su ciently silent. “We are going to call upon a very special camper, Sasha Khavasova, who will come up and share her story!” “Sasha! Sasha! Sasha!” the girls trilled and applauded, and Chava tried to quiet them as Sasha strode up to the podium. She was wearing a simple white shirt and black long skirt, which she had chosen from her counselor’s closet. “Shabbos Shalom, friends,” said Sasha with a grin. “Shabbos Shalom!” her bunkmates returned the greeting, and the dining room erupted into cheers. It took all of Tova’s warnings to get them to shush again. “I am here today to share the story of my life,” Sasha began, clearing her throat dramatically. “It starts in a small village in Georgia, to the south of Russia, where I was born thirteen years ago. I was my parents’ third child, but the only one who survived. My two older brothers both passed away when they were infants—the older one, Gregory, had the u, and there was no medicine, and the second was run over by a horse and buggy when he was two years old.” e campers sat, spellbound, as Sasha told a familiar tale of poverty and deprivation, yet a story of yearning: yearning for freedom, for the opportunities that we take for granted, for the chance to live without hunger or oppression, for the chance to live as a Jew. “We came to America two and a half years ago, my mother and father, my grandmother, whom I called Babushka, and myself, lled with dreams for the future,” Sasha continued. “We had heard that in New York there were so many opportunities, that all you needed to do was work hard and everything—money, freedom and comforts, would come your way.” She paused for a long moment, and her voice trembled as she continued. “Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s not exactly like that,” Sasha said. “Back in the old country, we had next to nothing, but we were happy because we were together. We had each other. But here,” and her voice choked with tears, “here we are no longer together. “My father found it too di cult to make a living, to adjust to life in New York, so he left our family and my parents got divorced. Babushka isn’t well, she was taken to the hospital and then to a nursing home, because she needs 24 hour care and my mother doesn’t have time. She works as a cleaner in an o ce building. Mama starts working at 8 p.m. and is done by six in the morning. I’m alone most of the time, I make myself dinner and put myself to bed, and I leave for school after Mama is already asleep for the day. “I thought that here, in New York, we would have a chance to go to shul, to keep Shabbos and holidays, to do all the things I couldn’t do back in Georgia. But who has time for that now? My mother is busy working, working, working all the time. She’s always tired and so anxious. Mama wishes she never would have come here. Babushka still loves me, but her memory is mostly gone, and so I’m all alone. “I’m in public school now, but what I want most of all is to go to a Jewish school. But that costs money, and Mama’s wages just about cover our rent and some food. Coming here to camp is a real miracle, thanks to my neighbor, Mrs. Newman, who On Motzoei Shabbos, after the campers were finally asleep, a closed door meeting took place in the camp director’s office. The phone rang in the silent o ce. Sandy Boyer li ed the receiver and listened for a moment. “Sorry,” she said, for the tenth time that morning. “Mr. Weinfeld cannot be disturbed.” As she returned the phone to her desk, Sandy glanced over at Mr. Weinfeld’s closed o ce door. She had been his receptionist for over ten years and in all that time, she had never seen her boss look so concerned. e o ce was like a morgue this morning. Hunched over his desk, David Weinfeld heard footsteps in the corridor. He knew who it was before the door opened. Sandy wouldn’t have let anyone else in today, a er his strict instructions. Still, he waited a few minutes before looking up from his computer. Albert Silverstein stood in the doorway, displaying What was wrong? Everything was wrong. David didn’t even know where to start. It was tempting to ask Albert’s advice, but David knew that this was something he had to handle himself. “No, nothing’s wrong,” he nally said. Albert looked at him dubiously. “Did you say something about lunch?” David said, in an e ort to play it cool. “Sounds good. Let’s grab something to eat.” Albert glanced at his friend as the two of them made their way out of David’s o ce at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. e two men had started out years before at the New York Fed, and they had taken business courses together at C.U.N.Y. Eventually, David had become executive vice president of the bank's nancial PROLOGUE A Novel of Terrorisim & Betrayal K פי‡ן ˘ „ער בילי‡ן „‡לער PEEPHOLE Happiness Shining Stars The Bankers Trust KIDS CLUB Snowman Slime Snowman Slime A simple yet adorable snowman slime craft... that’s tucked into a jar for safekeeping or as a fun winter display!! I hope you’re all keeping warm and safe amidst the cold, snow, and ice. We’re heading into the next stretch of Winter, and if you have big-little boys, you may have what to say about this week’s topic: The long day of cheder for the boys who do not seem fully ready for it. It seems that many mothers feel that their 7–10-year-old boys have a very long day learning, plus the extended a ernoon English hours. These children come home when it’s long been dark and there’s usually not time or energy le for much more than eat supper and head into the bedtime routine. Is there a way to help the boys who have a hard time with such a long day? Can anything help a child who enjoys to play and relax then transition to this ‘mature’ schedule? What do you prioritize during the short two hours that your boys are home in the evening? We’d love to hear from you! in Every Page... TOPIC #199 - WINTER SKIN My son had terribly chapped hands with small pimples. He applied EasyNurse, wore gloves overnight for two nights, and his skin improved dramatically, all the chapping was gone. EasyNurse also works great on chapped lips, burns, and other skin issues. You can find it at pharmacies and health food stores. Csay Topic #202 TOPIC #201 - CHALLAH FREEZING I wrap each Challah in Saran wrap so it stays very fresh and doesn’t get odors from the freezer. TOPIC #134 - CABINET REFRESH Air diusers and fresheners can be toxic and cause respiratory issues. For a safe, cheap, and eective solution to musty smells, start by opening all windows for several hours daily—like from 10 AM to 4 PM—for about a week. Lower the heat while the windows are open to help air out the space. Also, use vinegar, which you can buy by the gallon at Walmart for under $4. Spray it undiluted on walls and wipe them down, add a cup of it when washing clothes, and use it to clean floors and all surfaces. The smell disappears as it dries. You can also buy moisture-absorbing crystals from Walmart and hang them on doorknobs and in closets—they dissolve as they absorb moisture and odors. TOPIC #44 - ECZEMA AND SKIN INFECTIONS For the 7th grader dealing with eczema, I recommend trying Ashlem Natural TOPIC #44 - ECZEMA AND SKIN INFECTIONS If the girl who wrote about eczema can see a good nutritionist (like Mrs. Friedman from Ratio), that really helped me. She may need to avoid acidic foods that worsen her eczema, and focus on improving her gut health. Fermented foods, such as natural beet borscht can help. Even just a small amount daily is enough. Probiotics can also be eective, but homemade fermented foods are usually better and cheaper. She should stay away from anything that aggravates her skin, especially acidic foods and artificial creams, lotions, and shampoos. TOPIC # 17 - LAUNDRY TIPS I tried using a Clorox toilet bowl cleaner on the black line of a white shirt, as someone suggested. While the treated area came out extremely white, the rest of the shirt looked noticeably yellow in comparison. This method might work only on brand new shirts, so it’s probably not the best option for most cases. @EDUPA <T@L <T@L ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ @UTP TN? DEC. 31, ‘25 // WEEK 10 בעזרת השם יתברך 845.579.5700 | Levfamilyhealth.com | Evergreen Uptown Mall 1581 US-202, Pomona, NY 10970 Claim your free Baby Book now! call, text or email 845.579.5700 books@ levfamilyhealth.com Dr. Hirsch’s Answer: Few things make a parent’s heart race like seeing a high number on a thermometer, especially in the middle of the night. Fevers are one of the most common reasons parents call or rush in, and understandably so. The reassuring truth is that most fevers are a sign that your child’s body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. What is a fever? A fever is not an illness. It’s the body’s response to infection, most often viral. By raising the body temperature, the immune system helps fight germs more effectively. In children, a fever is generally defined as 100.4°F or higher. Kids with fevers may look flushed, tired, clingy, or uncomfortable, but the number alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Should I treat the fever? You don’t need to treat every fever. The more important question is how your child is acting. Treat the fever if your child is clearly uncomfortable, not drinking well, not sleeping because they feel unwell, or very fussy or achy. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen (for children over 6 months) can help your child feel better, and comfort is the goal. It’s okay to watch and wait if your child is drinking fluids, alert, interacting, and resting comfortably, even if the temperature is higher. Some children will still play or talk with a fever, and that’s reassuring. Special notes for infants Age matters when it comes to fevers. Any fever in a baby under 2 months requires immediate medical evaluation. For babies 2 to 6 months old, fevers should be discussed with your pediatrician, especially if feeding or behavior seems off. When to call or be seen Reach out if a fever lasts more than 3 days, if your child has trouble breathing, signs of dehydration, persistent vomiting, a concerning rash, or if a fever improves and then returns. Always check in sooner if something just doesn’t feel right. Bottom line Fevers can be stressful, but most are part of the healing process. Focus less on the number and more on your child. Treat discomfort, encourage fluids, and trust your instincts. Your pediatrician is here to help you decide when to treat and when it’s okay to let it ride. My child has a fever. When should I treat it, and when can I let it ride? __ Adina K.
