Kein ayin hora, we’re a family of fourteen siblings. Our annual Levine Chanukah party, undeniably the highlight of the year, couldn’t possibly be a haphazard gathering in someone’s dining room. In fact, if you’d count spouses, married children, and their children, we were over 100 people, a crowd that could only be accommodated in a simcha hall. And simcha halls weren’t cheap---$500 a night, last time I checked, just to rent the space. Do you know how much the food costs for such a party? A couple of years ago, my brother Yanky, who is nancially doing well, o ered to subsidize the costs. at was the last year he placed the burden on his rather broad shoulders. e following year, we chose potluck, which meant every family had to bring at least two dishes, plentiful enough to feed such a crowd. Soon after we made our announcement, the complaints started. Some of my younger siblings (working mothers under a lot of pressure), found it challenging to cook and bake for days. ey o ered to make ‘just one’ dish, or to bring nosh, because that was the easiest for them. In the end, of course, most of the work fell onto the two or three ‘machers’ in the family, the ones who usually took the burden on their shoulders. My sister Shaindy and I—the uno cial leaders, ended up making six dishes between the two of us, the rest. By the time the party too exhausted to enjoy it. AR TUASJ VA?=AN KA< IETAPEM NLEEU < SHC I share this story now because, in a recent shiur on the topic of chilul Hashem, someone asked me a sincere and pointed question: “Rabbi, when your case went all the way to the Supreme Court, wasn’t that a chillul Hashem?” It was an honest question—one that deserved more than a short, quick answer. It reminded me that many know what happened, but very few know why it happened, what guidance I followed, how I viewed the entire saga through the lens of emunah, and why the experience was not a chillul Hashem but an opportunity for tremendous spiritual clarity. And so I write about it now—not to reopen headlines from a decade ago, but to share the inner story, the hashkafah, and the lessons that Hashem placed in front of me. ere are chapters in life that arrive without invitation. You don’t seek them, you don’t expect them, and you certainly don’t dream that one day they will carry your name all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. But Hashem writes stories far bigger than the ones we would ever write for ourselves, and He places us in situations whose purpose becomes clear only afterward. My story began simply. For years, I traveled constantly for Klal Yisroel—shiurim, seminars, chizuk events. Northwest Airlines (now Delta) became almost a second home, and naturally I accumulated the highest frequent- yer status, along with hundreds of thousands of miles. Free ights, small upgrades, priority service— nothing glamorous, just the practical perks of someone who spent more time ying than sleeping. en, during a period of labor disputes, baggage delays suddenly became extreme. Hours would pass before luggage showed Csay Topic #192 TOPIC #189 – TEACHER APPRECIATION As a teacher, I can say that appreciation and tips go a very long way. It really gives the teacher a boost to continue. At the end of the year, I once received - not a tip, not a thank you from the mother - but a personal note written by a second grader and the mother put it into a cute envelope - a #1 Teacher pencil case. It also had a small chocolate from the grocery store inside. The nicest part was that this child wrote the note all by himself, and he wrote everything that he liked during that entire year. I too take pride in her progress and accomplishments! When mothers take the extra minute to jot the words “Thank you” near a signature, that is appreciation! Let’s not undermine the meaning of these words or the power of a compliment. There is no need to raise the bar. TOPIC #189 – TEACHER APPRECIATION I like to send something every Rosh Chodesh. Nothing major, a little something. It could be a bar of chocolate, a cheese snack with a cappuccino, etc. Sometimes homemade, exciting to teach my daughters because every Rosh Chodesh I usually send something small with a cute poem; a four-line poem is enough. For the melamdim, my husband gives a check. Also, nothing big - but every month. I like to randomly, here and there, bake fresh cookies or rugelach in the morning and I send that with a nice note.
