NOV. 26, ‘25 // As David waited at the third light, about to turn right toward the West Side Highway, a blue Buick Century behind him caught his eye. The dent in its front fender looked familiar. He thought that he had already seen that dent, and tried to recall when and where. Suddenly he remembered. That car had passed him while he had waited for the parking lot attendant to bring him his car. "Something's suspicious about that car," he told himself. “I'll have to see whether its driver has decided to follow me." The honking of the cars behind him brought him back to reality. The light had turned green. Instinctively, he turned left, instead of right, and continued along Chambers Street, keeping his eyes glued to the mirror to see what the driver of the Buick would do. His suspicions grew stronger when he saw the two cars which separated him from the Buick making a right onto the West Side Highway, while the Buick made a left and followed him. He noticed that the driver of the Buick was trying not to travel directly behind him. The Buick driver stopped for a moment near the curb, and let the two cars behind pass him, before he continued to follow David's Lincoln. The driver of the Buick pulled the same trick a few moments later, when the two cars between them also left Chambers Street. David noticed the Buick stop and let a small Volkswagen turn in ahead of him. The Buick's courteous pause, which was quite uncharacteristic of New York City drivers, left no doubt in David’s mind as to the driver's purpose. Recap: David sends his family away for a few days and begins to follow the trail of suspicious money transfers in an effort to uncover the perpetrator.
