AUGUST 13, ‘25 // Questions & Answers from Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l’s Thursday Night Lecture On the Heat of Summer Q. What is the purpose of humidity and heat? On Summer Vacations Q. Is it wrong to take your family on a vacation? A. It’s a good question and I’ll answer it by giving you an analogy. Here is a man who comes home and he has to go through the kitchen in order to go, let’s say to the bathroom. So he tells his wife, “What is this? It’s so hot in this kitchen!” So she says “I’m sorry dear. I’m going to turn the oven off.” She turns it off. Now, a few minutes later when he comes out of the bathroom, he says, “Is supper ready? She says, “No. I’m sorry but I had to turn the oven off.” And so in September all the ripe red apples will be out on the stands. How does an apple become red and juicy and sweet? It’s only because Hakadosh Baruch Hu turns on the heat. The summer is the kitchen that ripens these delicious fruits that we’re going to eat all winter. And therefore are we going to complain because of the good times that are waiting for us? Summer is the time when all the fun for the ensuing year is being prepared. Now that’s only one aspect of the heat. The truth is there’s much more to it because the climate is suited to the diet of the people. Every continent has its own diet – people don’t eat the same things – and therefore they have a certain climate that’s suited to them. Now, there are things that we don’t know yet, many facts of which we are ignorant, but some things we know already. We know for instance that sunlight when it strikes the skin creates a certain vitamin. It’s very important. Children who are deprived of sunlight are prone to develop rickets. There are other diseases. Of course being exposed to too much sunlight certainly is unhealthy. That’s why clothing is important for people to wear. We’re not created to be nude. And those people who are going to go to the nude beaches are going to be carted off to the morgue sooner or later because there’s no question that skin cancer is on the increase today; more than it ever was before due to excessive sunbathing. We’re not created to be naked. But the climate certainly is suited to our physical natures and as time goes on, we’re going to discover there are many benefits to the summertime heat. Now people who have a tendency to arthritis, they love the summer because the sun bakes their old bones and it bakes the pain out of their bones. In wintertime, they’re reminded of the good old days that they had last August when the sun was making things comfortable. Now they’re taking aspirins to make up for the sun. And so there are many compensations. Our knowledge of medicine today, although it made great leaps in the last seventy five years, but it’s nothing compared to what will be known in the next seventy five years. And so some day people will realize that the winter is good for us and the summer is good for us, and that each season brings blessings of its own. A. IIt depends where and for what reason. If you’re taking them to a place, a frum colony, where your children will be able to learn all the time and will be able to be osek in avodas Hashem, why not? If it’s just to stop learning, to go away, no. I want to tell you something. The whole business of vacation is not a Jewish business. In Europe the yeshivos didn’t have any vacation in the summertime. They continued summer and winter exactly the same. That’s how it should be. You can’t take a vacation from shleimus, from perfection, from learning Torah. All the yeshivah men, if the yeshivos close down for the summertime, they should make it their business to sit and learn all day long, to review. Otherwise whatever they learn they forget and next time they look at the mesichta, it’s like a new mesichta. It’s a pity. Spend the summertime in learning and learning and learning. That’s our lives. Ki heim chayeinu. Of course always you should get fresh air. Every day take a walk. Even in the wintertime take a brisk walk for a half hour or so. Always. Always do things for your health. I won’t say you can’t go to the country but only if it’s going to help your ruchniyus. If it’s only in gashmiyus but in ruchniyus it’s going to be a loss then it doesn’t pay to sacrifice so much. Some people have achieved very much in the summertime. They sit and learn all the time. School teachers have vacation the whole summer time. They sit two months and learn. Alright, why not? INGREDIENTS: • 2 ready Graham cracker Pie crusts • 1 bar Torino Chocolate • 1 stick Margarine • 3 Eggs • 1 cup Confectioners Sugar • 1 Whipped topping • ½ pack vanilla Pudding • Baking Chocolate for drizzling, melted • Knafeh or Cookie Crumbs for topping DIRECTIONS: 1. In a double boiler melt the chocolate bar and margarine and let cool. Add in the eggs and confectioners sugar and mix well. Pour into 2 graham cracker crusts and freeze. 2. With an electric beater, mix the whipped topping and vanilla pudding until peaks form. Once the chocolate is set pour over the chocolate mixtures. 3. Each mouthful balances rich, smoky meat with the delicate sweetness of slow-cooked onions. INGREDIENTS: • 1 pack Flaky dough squares • 1 pack Pastrami • 2 Onions, diced • 1 Tbsp. Onion soup mix • 1 Tbsp. Ketchup • 1 tsp. Mustard • 2 tsp. Barbeque sauce • ½ Tbsp. Sugar • 1 Egg, for brushing • Everything but the Bagel spice DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 375°. 2. In a pot, sauté onions until golden. Cut the pastrami into thin strips and add to the onions with the rest of the ingredients and cook for 10 minutes on medium, stirring occasionally. 3. Spoon a heaping tablespoon of the mixture onto each flaky square. Fold over to create a triangle and seal tightly. Brush with the egg wash and top with everything but the bagel spice. 4.
