What is the meaning of this event? It carries a powerful and profo message. We know that on the night of Tisha B’Av, Klal Yisrael cries. But w does the Ribbono Shel Olam do on this night? e Midrash teache that HaKadosh Baruch Hu Himself cries for His children on Tisha B And now, the Ribbono Shel Olam is not just telling us through words of Chazal — He is showing us. e Gemara in Brachos (daf 59a) discusses the meaning of earthquake: גוהא מהו? בשעה שהקב"ה זוכר את בניו ששרויים בצער בין ת העולם – מוריד שתי דמעות לים הגדול, וקולו נשמע מסוף העולם ועד סופו — “What is an earthquake? When HaKadosh Baruch Hu remembers children su ering among the nations, He sheds two tears into the G Sea, and their sound reverberates from one end of the world to the oth e Midrash Eicha Rabbah (on Eicha 1:1) echoes this as well: Ribbono Shel Olam, kavyachol, sits on the ground and weeps. But now, it is not only a teaching in the Gemara or Midrash. something we were able to feel physically — an earthquake on T B’Av. Hashem is showing us that He cries for us. And we, in turn, m cry for Him. Even more striking is what is brought down in the Sefer O HaGeonim, which elaborates on the spiritual signi cance of earthquake. It explains that such events are meant to remind Yisrael that Hashem has not forsaken them, has not forgotten th and has not abandoned them. Rather, He is preparing to take us b It is meant to strengthen our hearts and renew our hope in the Geu the ultimate redemption — because it will come. Can you imagine an earthquake on Tisha B’Av? We were zocheh only to believe that Hashem is crying for us — but to see it, to fe to experience the trembling of the earth as a sign of the tears of Ribbono Shel Olam for His people. What an Ahavah Geluyah — wh revealed love. What a powerful demonstration of the ה רבה אהבתנו ה' אלוקינו — “with great love You have loved us, Hashem our God.” And we w zocheh to witness it. What is the explanation of Chazal: “Kol hamesamei’ach chasan v’kallah, k’ilu banah achas meichurvos Yerushalayim — if you gladden the chasan and kallah, it’s like you’re rebuilding one of the ruined buildings of Yerushalayim” (Berachos 6b)? Why Does an Orange have Sections Q. Why is it that oranges are in sections? A. Let me explain to you. What was ancient Yerushalayim? It was buildings, but everything there was a personification of idealism. In Yerushalayim, they were idealists. Idealism means there are spiritual values. In the houses of Yerushalayim you had kedushah, you had chesed, you had good middos; every good thing was practiced in ancient Yerushalayim. We have no idea how much Yerushalayim in the days of old was perfect in human behavior. “Neki’ei hadas shebi’Yerushalayim” (Gittin 87b). The Gemara speaks of those pure-minded men of Yerushalayim. They didn’t say one extra word, and even when they wrote their names as witnesses on a shtar, they wrote, “Reuven ben Shimon,” and the word “eid” they didn’t want to add because eid is superfluous. They didn’t waste that extra word. And so, Yerushalayim in ancient times was full of perfection. “Ir hashalem Yerushalayim,” a city of shleimus (Bereishis Rabbah 56:10). Every young couple starts their lives with the possibility of building a house of kedushah; it’s up to them, that’s their chance. Of course, kedushah requires self-control and middos tovos; to think about Hashem always. Everything you do in that house is l’avdo b’leivav shalem (Tefillah, U’va L’Tzion). A person should make up his mind that he and his wife are going to serve Hashem, they’ll bring up children b’derech haTorah with avodas Hashem. Then that house is rebuilding one of the churvos of Yerushalayim. It’s restoring one of the things we once had. Start at the inauguration, the simchas chasan v’kallah. Have in mind how great is the building, this “binyan adai ad” that you’re starting now. Understand that someday you’ll be grandfathers and grandmothers; you’ll have a house full of talmidei chachamim. I have a picture of a certain family, I was present at their wedding many years ago. Today they have grandchildren. Their sons are talmidei chachamim, all of them, a family let’s say of ten children. Their children, their grandchildren, all talmidei chachamim. It’s a beautiful family. Now, I was present at their wedding. They seemed to be a regular young frum couple. It was a beautiful wedding, very fine. But did we think that someday it’ll turn into a mosad, mamesh a Beis Hamikdash? That’s what their home is today. The house is a Beis Hamikdash where all these children grew up and became bnei Torah. So therefore, when you are mesamei’ach a chasan and kallah, you should have in mind what it’s going to turn into, what it’s capable of being. It’s like being mesamei’ach at the chanukas Beis Hamikdash. “Baruch Hashem,” we say. “Now this young couple is going to build a new Beis Hamikdash.” That’s one of the churvos of Yerushalayim. A. In order that you shouldn’t ruin them when you open them up. If they were all one section, and you punctured it, all of the orange would immediately begin to deteriorate. But they’re separately packed packages! You take out one section and you puncture it and let the juice drool down over your lips, while you know that a fresh package is waiting for you. Each one is isolated from the other. Now in the case of the apple, you don’t need that because the juice is not in a flowing state. If you bite into an apple, it can happen sometimes that some of the syrup, the cider drips down, but it’s not that plentiful. There’s another reason why fruits have different forms; because each one is supposed to attract our attention in different ways. That’s why there are white roses, red roses, pink ones, and yellow. Ask, “Why aren’t all roses red?” The answer is if they were, then you’d stop looking at them. But because they’re so different in color, if your mind was wandering when you passed by the red rosebush, it might be attracted to think about the yellow rosebush. Therefore, you have different kinds of fruits with different kinds of taste. When you ate an apple, you weren’t thinking? Aah, you missed an opportunity to enjoy that apple and wonder at the marvels of it. Now, if you eat an orange maybe that will stimulate your imagination, because that’s the purpose of the orange, to make you think about the Creator. Let’s say you ate an orange also unthinkingly, so you’re trying a pear now, a different taste, maybe this will wake you up. Hashem is trying His best, He’s using all kinds of enticements to get you to think. That’s why things are different in this world. Serves 4-6 INGREDIENTS: • 4 heaping cups ice • 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk • 4 cups whole milk or half-and-half • 6 teaspoons instant coffee • ½ cup hot water (to dissolve coffee) • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 teaspoon chocolate liqueur • 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup, plus more for drizzling • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Whipped cream (for topping) • Shaved chocolate or extra cocoa (optional, for garnish) DIRECTIONS: 1. 1. In your blender, add the ice and blend until chunky or fully blended. Divide into serving glasses or in a pitcher. Set the empty blender aside. 2. 2.
