JULY 30 ‘25 // Questions & Answers from Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l’s Thursday Night Lecture Why Mourn on Tishah B’Av? It Was So Long Ago… Q. How can we mourn on Tishah B’Av for the losses to our people that took place so long ago? Feeling Regret for the Beis Hamikdash Q. What should be our function from now until Tishah B’Av? A. There’s no such thing as “long ago” in our nation. It’s a big mistake to think that time makes any difference to us. Our history is one monolithic history; from the beginning of our history till the end of time, it’s one existence. All the Jews are one nation; the Jews who once lived, and the Jews who some day will live, are all one people. On Rosh Hashanah we say: “Elokeinu v’Elokei avoseinu ya’aleh v’yavo zichroneinu u’fikdoneinu” (Yaaleh V’Yavo of Rosh Chodesh and Yom Tov). We ask Hashem to remember, “v’zichron kol amcha beis Yisrael.” Who is the beis Yisrael that He has to remember? Only the ones that are alive? No! The whole beis Yisrael that ever lived, we’re one people. It’s an error to think that once they died it’s all over and we forget about them, put them in the ground and it’s all finished. Oh no! They’re just as alive as we are. All those neshamos that were slaughtered are just as alive as we are, and their blood still cries out from the earth: “Kol d’mei achicha tzo’akim eilai min ha’adamah — the blood [of all the martyrs] is crying out from the earth” (Bereishis 4:10). It doesn’t stop crying when two days pass by — or two years or two thousand years pass by; it’s still crying out. And therefore, we are one nation. Goy echad means we are one nation from the beginning to the end. It’s a serious error. Therefore, Avraham Avinu is not someone who once lived, Avraham Avinu is our father of today; he’s still alive, our entire history lives. And that’s why we learn Chumash again and again. There’s nothing past and nothing future; it’s all together in the eyes of Hashem. Hashem means: “Hayah, hoveh, v’yihiyeh,” all tenses are together. Now get that lesson into your head. Hashem is all tenses together, “E’heyeh asher E’heyeh” (Shemos 3:14), there is no past tense to Hashem. So a man who made a sin fifty years ago, let’s say he was bar mitzvah and made a sin. Oh…he was just a little boy, he was only thirteen and a half years old, forget about it. No! It’s remembered forever, nothing is forgotten; it’s remembered forever. And even sins of our forefathers are remembered forever, and the mitzvos of our forefathers. “V’zocher chasdei avos — He remembers the devoted acts of our forefathers.” So if we demand today, Hashem should give us kindness in the merit of Avraham Avinu, we’re saying that Avraham Avinu is still alive, as far as we’re concerned. There’s no such thing as “long ago” by the Jewish people. Its yesterday, it’s now, and it’s our future. The Beis Hamikdash is burning now, it’s actually burning right now, “Kol dor shelo nivneh Beis Hamikdash b’yamav, k’ilu nechrav b’yamav” (Yerushalmi, Yoma 1:1). The churban Beis Hamikdash is taking place today. It’s a fundamental attitude, there’s no past to the Jewish people, and therefore we live with the past and we live with the future. A. We have to understand what the loss of the Beis Hamikdash means to us. Now, when I say Beis Hamikdash, I mean all that goes with it. Th loss of the Sanhedrin in the lishkas hagazis, a great Sanhedrin, is also a tremendous irreparable loss. We have to realize also the loss of all the great personalities that we had in the days of old, not necessarily because of the churban, they couldn’t live forever, but still it’s a great loss. We don’t have the great teachers, pathfi rs, and guides we had in the days of old. We have to mourn for the loss of nevuah. Ahh, the prophets, the nevi’im, what a gift that was, when the Shechinah was shoreh b’Yisrael, and the prophets spoke the words of truth. It hurt very much, but they revealed to the people the core of all problems; they told the truth itself. The word of Hashem that enlightened the eyes, nevuah — a tremendous loss. When the first Beis Hamikdash was destroyed, nevuah ceased. Therefore, there is a lot to think about in these days, and it’s a big achievement if a person begins to listen a little bit from now until Tishah B’Av and even later to the bas kol, the voice of Hashem that cries out for the churban Beis Hamikdash. Now, I want to give you some advice. All year around, from time to time, even though you won’t make tikun chatzos before you go to bed, once in while, sit down on the ground for a moment and just say, “Im eshkackech Yerushalayim tishkach yemini — How can I forget you Yerushalayim?” (Tehillim 137:5). Of course, that is the old Yeshuhalayim, not the one of today. Never, even once in your life, did you sit down by yourself in your bedroom when your wife was not there? Th n you are missing something important. Do it. Nobody should see you, just sit down on the ground and say these words.
