Place the cubed watermelon and chopped kiwi in a single layer on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for 4–6 hours or overnight, until fully frozen. 2. Add the frozen fruit to a high-speed blender or food processor along with the lime juice. Blend until smooth and creamy. You may need to pause and scrape down the sides a few times. If your blender needs a little help, you can add a splash of water or coconut water. 3. Give it a taste, if you want it a little sweeter, blend in 1–2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup. 4. You can enjoy it immediately as a soft-servestyle sorbet or transfer it to a container and freeze for another 1–2 hours for a firmer texture. Scoop and serve! Garnish with fresh mint, kiwi slices, or a sprinkle of lime zest for a pretty presentation. TIP If you don’t finish what you prepared and need to refreeze the leftovers, let the sorbet sit out for 5–10 minutes before scooping so it softens. TIP Watermelon Kiwi Sorbet Choosing a Good One This part took me a while to figure out, but once you know what to look for, you’ll rarely get a dud: Look for the field spot. That’s the creamy yellow patch on the outside. A deep yellow spot means it ripened on the vine. If it’s white or pale, skip it. Knock on it. A ripe one should sound hollow, not dull. Check the weight. It should feel heavy for its size, that means it’s full of water. Look at the skin. You want it to be dull, not shiny, and free of major dents or cuts. The world’s heaviest watermelon weighed over 350 pounds! Can you have too much? Watermelon is full of goodness, but like anything, it’s possible to have too much, especially if you’re sensitive to sugar or have certain health concerns. It’s a high-glycemic fruit, so if you deal with blood sugar ups and downs, try pairing it with something like a handful of nuts or some hemp seeds to help balance it out. But honestly, for most people, a few cups a day is perfectly fine, and such a delicious way to stay cool and nourished during the summer. Watermelon is a great snack to give the kids as well, especially in the summer. You can cut it into triangle “pops” and leave the rind on so they can hold it like a handle, it’s fun, super hydrating, and keeps them happily munching for a while. Just keep an eye out for the seeds if they’re still little. I would stick to seedless varieties when serving it to toddlers to keep things easy. One of the reasons watermelon feels so right in summer is because it’s in season. Our bodies are naturally drawn to it when we need cooling, hydrating, easy-to-digest foods. When it’s out of season, I shift to warmer, grounding fruits and veggies like squash and root veggies. Don’t Toss the Rind or Seeds! Most people throw out the rind and spit the seeds, but both are actually edible and loaded with nutrients. The Rind The white part just under the green skin has fiber and L-citrulline too. You can pickle it, blend it into smoothies, or sauté it like zucchini. It’s a great way to use the whole fruit. The Seeds If you have the kind with black seeds, don’t toss them! Roast them like pumpkin seeds for a crunchy, high-protein snack. They’re full of magnesium and healthy fats. Technically, watermelon is both a fruit and a vegetable since it’s part of the same plant family as cucumbers and squash. Not all watermelons are red inside either, some are yellow or orange, and they’re just as sweet and delicious. JULY 23, ‘25 // Questions & Answers from Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l’s Thursday Night Lecture Missing the Beis Hamikdash Q. Who needs the Beis Hamikdash if there is Olam Haba? Berachah on Hearing Q. Why don’t we make a berachah on the ability to hear? A. The question actually is, who needs Olam Hazeh if there is Olam Haba? The answer is, Olam Hazeh is the place where you have opportunity. You know, when Reb Elazar Hagadol was about to pass away, his talmidim came to him and they said, “Rabeinu lamdeinu orchos chayim — teach us the ways of life” (Berachos 28b). He told them a few things. Th fi st thing he told them is, “Hizharu b’chvod chavreichem — be careful with the honor of your fellow Jew.” That’s the number one! You hear? A man, just before he is dying, and he is giving instructions to his talmidim, number one on the list, “Hizharu b’chvod chavreichem.” Be careful with your friends, your wife, your husband, with your neighbors, with your chaveirim, “hizharu.” That’s so important. Now we know why we have friends and neighbors, why we are married. It’s all to test us. Hashem wants us to utilize the opportunity. Not everybody is easy to deal with, and even the best people, sometimes it’s not so easy to deal with them. And we have to always keep in mind, that’s our perfection. That’s our shleimus, if we know how to deal with people. Be careful with the honor of your fellow Jew, and of your husband, and of your wife, and of others. Don’t talk against them. Your mother-in- law, your daughter-in-law, your mechutanim; “Hizharu!” Be careful with everybody’s kavod. That’s the number one requirement of a Jew, and that’s why we are in this world. So why did Hashem make our fellow man? To test us. Why did He make some people stubborn? Some people akshanim, baalei gaivah? To test us. You can get along with them? That’s your shleimus, everything in the world is to make you better. Now, the Beis Hamikdash was one of the most glorious opportunities to become better. If you could walk in the Beis Hamikdash of the olden days, if you could see “kohanim b’avodosam” (Arachin 4a) how the kohanim served Hashem, you would actually feel that Hashem lives in this house. You know what a feeling that is? Hashem is “Shachen babayis hazeh!” (Berachos 12a). That’s emunah, to gain a feeling which is true. Hashem dwells among the bnei Yisrael, “hashochein b’toch bnei Yisrael” (Bamidbar 35:34). If you have a building where Hashem lives, that’s His address where you bring offerings to Him. The emunah chushis, the real feeling of seeing Hashem’s home that you get by seeing the korbanos, and the way the korbanos are served with yirah, with great fear by the kohanim. The greatest kind of respect in every little detail, and it had an impression on those who saw it that lasted forever. People went away from the Beis Hamikdash with minds that were changed forever. So we gained much emunah from the Beis Hamikdash. And now we mourn, we weep for that lost opportunity. So now what do you do? Now you have to do other things, whatever you can to gain emunah. And therefore, when we talk about the loss of the Beis Hamikdash, we mean the loss of opportunity to become great. Today there are other opportunities. Yes! Learn Torah, learn Mesillas Yesharim, learn Chovos Halevavos, absolutely, there are ways of becoming great today, too. When people utilize these ways, Hashem says, “I’ll give you credit as if you had a Beis Hamikdash!” Utilize them properly, to make the preparations that you are supposed to do to prepare in this world for your career in the World to Come. A. The truth is, there are more things that we posses for which we don’t make a berachah. That is because a berachah is given only when there is a technical situation where something begins. So you make a berachah in the morning of Pokei’ach Ivrim when you wash your eyes; that’s what the Gemara says. There’s a certain time when your eyesight begins functioning. You get up in the morning, you wash your eyes; of course, we wash the face too. But washing the eyes removes the sediment that accumulates during sleep. If it’s not removed, it becomes a breeding place for germs and that’s what happens eventually in backward countries. People get eye diseases when they don’t wash their eyes. It’s the washing of the eyes in the morning that’s the technical act, the occasion of making a berachah on the eyes. When you start walking, it’s the beginning of something. But hearing, there’s no such thing as beginning to hear. There’s no technical beginning, there’s no time to make a berachah on it, it’s something that’s functioning all the time. Although such things — hearing, touching, and smelling — are very great blessings, there is no berachah on things that don’t have a technical beginning. JULY 23, ‘25 // Vegetable Fried Rice with Edamame Turn leftover rice into a vibrant, veggie-packed stir-fry featuring tender edamame and fresh greens. INGREDIENTS: • ½ (12 oz.) bag frozen shelled edamame • 1-2 tablespoons oil, for sauteing • 1 medium onion, chopped • 2–3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 cup shredded carrots • 1 cup shredded red cabbage • 4-5 cups leftover white rice • 1 Tbsp soy sauce • 1 Tbsp white vinegar • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds • Salt, to taste • ¼ tsp ground black pepper (adjust to taste) • 2 scallions, sliced for garnish DIRECTIONS: 1. Add the frozen edamame plus 2 tablespoons water to a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on high for about 3 minutes. Let sit for 1 minute, then drain and set aside. The edamame should be softened, but still have a bite to it. 2. Heat oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and saute for 7 minutes until slightly golden. 3. Add the garlic, carrots, and red cabbage. Saute for 2-3 minutes until the veggies are tender-crisp. Add the thawed edamame, leftover rice, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, sesame seeds, salt, and pepper. Stir-fry on high heat until everything is well combined and heated through. 4. Garnish with scallions and serve hot. 74

FOR THE SALAD: • 1 cup frozen shelled edamame • 1 red pepper, thinly sliced • 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed, optional • 1 8 oz. bag shredded purple cabbage • 1 8 oz. bag shredded white/ green cabbage • 1 cup shredded carrots • 4 scallions, thinly sliced • Slivered or sliced almonds • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds FOR THE SESAME-LIME DRESSING: • 6 tablespoons soy sauce • 6 tablespoons rice vinegar • 3 tablespoons lime juice • 1½ teaspoons toasted sesame oil • 3-4 teaspoons sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar) • 1 tsp chili crisp or chili flakes (optional- adjust to taste) DIRECTIONS: 1. Add the frozen edamame plus 2 tablespoons water to a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on high for about 3 minutes. Let sit for 1 minute, then drain and set aside. The edamame should be softened, but still have a bite to it. 2. Toast the almonds in a single layer on a baking sheet, at 350°F for about 5 minutes (watch closely so they shouldn't burn). 3. Assembly: In a large bowl, combine the thawed edamame, red pepper, chickpeasoptional, cabbage, carrots, scallions, almonds, and sesame seeds 4. Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together all the dressing ingredients. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss to combine. 5. Serve immediately, or refrigerate for 30 minutes for enhanced flavor. 6. Keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container (store without dressing)— great for meal prep! 7.
