Slice extremely thinly. 4. Place in the center of a large serving board, garnish with the diced vegetables on the sides. 5. In a food processor blend all the pesto ingredients until smooth. 6. Serve the pesto on the fish, or on the side. Boards, nowadays, are anything but boring. MAY 14, ‘25 // Questions & Answers from Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l’s Thursday Night Lecture The Sin of Speeding Q. Is driving over the speed limit an issur deoreisa? Thanking Hashem for a Near Miss Q. I was walking in the street and I almost got hit by a car (or almost drowned), what should I do to thank Hashem properly? A. Yes. I’ll tell you what the Gemara says in some places: למה לי קרא סברא היא – we don’t need a possuk to tell us something if we can figure it out with our own logic; the gemara says if it’s a sevara it’s mideoreisa. Don’t we know that המוציא מחברו עליו הראיה is only a sevara – there’s no possuk for that – and still it’s one of the yesodos of halachah. Now, driving more than the speed limit means first of all it will cost you money if you get a fine. It’s common sense that you shouldn’t do something that will cause you to pay a fine. The fine for speeding is expensive. And secondly, who knows what can happen, chalilah. Once you’re speeding anything can happen. And so, anybody who is reckless in driving, he’s a choteh, a choteh gamur. And he’s held responsible even if nothing happened. Because he risked his life and other people’s lives so he’s held responsible even if nothing happened. A. “Ish k’matnas yado — each person according to his ability” (Devarim 16:17). One thing you’re able to do, however, and that’s for a very long time, when you say, “Modim anachnu lach,” don’t just bow down for nothing, it’s a pity, it’s a waste of a glorious opportunity. Bowing down is a very important act, and not to utilize it is a rachmanus. It states when you come to bring the bikurim, “v’hishtachavisa” (Devarim 26:10); bowing down is a purpose in itself, it’s avodas Hashem to bow down. You have to think that you’re doing it for a purpose, it’s hakaras hatov. “Modim… we’re thanking You.” And so, when a person barely escapes getting hit by a car, as long as he can, he should continue every time he bows down to think about what could have happened, and to thank Hashem. Now, that’s not to be considered as lifnim mishuras hadin — only for big tzaddikim. After all, you can’t play around with words, and the words modim anachnu lach mean that. What are you thanking for? And therefore, you should prepare yourself beforehand, hold your keys in your hand, hold a pencil in your hand, whatever it is, so that when you come to modim you should remember, modim anachnu lach. You went to the doctor and you were worried, and the doctor said, “I’m sorry to tell you there’s nothing wrong with you.” You walk out, don’t forget that. Hashem says, “Al tishkacheini — Don’t forget Me.” Therefore, our reaction should be: “We’ll remember You, Hashem. “Hashem Elokai l’olam odeka — I’ll remember You forever!” Like David said when he got well from his illness, “L’maan yi’zarmecha kavod — I’ll sing about Your glory — l’olam odeka” (Tehillim 30:13). Therefore, that’s the first thing to do and the easiest thing to do. If you’re able to do more than that, then certainly, ish k’matnas yado.
